The central part of Dalmatia is known for its beautiful beaches particularly in the Makarska region and the Zlatni rat beach on the island of Brac. Split is an old Roman town developed in and around Diocletian palace build by the Roman emperor Diocletian 1700 years ago. Both Diocletian palace and numerous other monuments from the Roman period have been preserved until present day. Within the palace you can also visit a cathedral named after St. Duje, the patron saint of Split, built in the 7th century upon the mausoleum of emperor Diocletian.
Makarska riviera is one of the best-known tourist destinations in Croatia, embraced by the mountain Biokovo from behind and facing the Adriatic Sea. Makarska, Baška Voda, Brela and Tučepi are all famous places of Makarska riviera, known for their kilometer long pebbled beaches, activities for the whole family, entertainment and water sports, large offer of food and wine, and night life until the morning hours.
The island of Hvar will attract you with lavender scent, pleasant Mediterranean climate and more of sunny days in year than any other place in Croatia. In the town of Hvar you can experience exceptional cultural-historical heritage together with health programs and beautiful nature. 700 hundred-year-old town walls surround the town. It's center, the largest in Dalmatia, is surrounded with Renaissance and Baroque palaces.
The island of Brač has something for everyone. It is famous for its Zlatni rat beach situated outside of the town of Bol. The beach is a favorite destination of surfers and all water sports lovers. In the smaller places on the island such as Milna, Supetar or Bobovišće one can easily find peace and quiet in the authentic stone architecture. Visitors who wish to experience the atmosphere of a fisherman village are recommended to visit Positra, a small place near the bay of Lovrečina, an ideal spot for a fish picnic.
The islands of Hvar, Brac, Vis, Solta, Ciovo and some smaller islands belong to the group of central Dalmatian islands. The islands of Hvar and Brac are favorite trendy destinations which attract tourists with an ideal combination of nature, culture and fun. The island of Vis is the farthest settled island along the Adriatic where you will find hidden coves with beautiful beaches which are within walking and even sailing distances much like on the islands of Solta and Ciovo for those of you looking for peace and quiet to recharge your batteries.
