The Kvarner islands are located in the Kvarner bay in the northern part of the Adriatic Sea. The islands of Krk, Rab, Cres, Losinj and Pag are marked by the moderate Mediterranean climate and specific spirit that rules these islands. Here you will find many cultural monuments, hear the specific dialect of the locals and enjoy the peace and quiet of the islands.
The island of Cres is the second largest island on the Adriatic. The South of the island, in the town Osor, is connected to the neighboring island of Lošinj by a drawbridge. There is a sweet water lake
on the island called Vrana, a natural phenomenon. The island is a natural habitat of the griffon vulture, a very rare bird. The view from the towns of Beli or Lubenice over the sea and cliffs will leave you breathless. Valun is another picturesque place with a pebbled beach. In the town of Cres, island's capital, you can see Renaissance palaces of noble families that used to live on the island.
Don't be fooled by the naked stone surface while you approach the island of Rab by ferry from Mišnjak port. The town of Rab, the island's capital, is a historical gem full of Renaissance and Gothic palaces of old noble families. If you stay in town, you can visit its four bell towers or walk through the stone streets. In Kampor you can feel the atmosphere of an old fisherman place which kept its original appearance. Near Kampor there is a sandy beach and a lovely town of Lopar. If you are curious about authentic domestic cuisine be sure to visit the town of Barbat where you can taste domestic sheep cheese, wine and honey.
The island of Susak, situated west of the island of Lošinj, belongs to the Cres-Lošinj archipelago and is also known as "the sandy island". There is only one village on the island – Susak. The streets in the village are narrow and are not designed for modern vehicles, only for the passage of men and "karijole". There are no paved roads or cars on the island. The language spoken by island residents is very specific being the mixture of Old Croatian, English, Italian and French language. Susak is the island of sand, reed, specific language and picturesque traditional costumes that attract visitors with its unspoiled nature and clear blue sea. The island of Susak is connected by ferry to the island of Lošinj and the town of Rijeka.
The island of Lošinj used to be connected to the island of Cres but the Romans dug a canal
between the two islands thus making a passageway for boats and ships. Around the island of Lošinj there are several smaller islands such as Unije, Ilovik and Susak which mostly consists of sand. The largest place on the island of Lošinj is Mali Lošinj famous for its beautiful beaches and pine trees. One can also see dolphins in the Lošinj archipelago where there is a reservation for these beautiful animals. There is also a day dedicated to dolphins celebrated in August. In smaller places on the island such as Nerezine, Ćunski and St. Jakov one can relax in the peace and quiet.
