Southern Dalmatia

When talking about southern Dalmatia one has to mention Dubrovnik. Many international magazines have done features on this very city and it is often the destination of jet-setters. Walking along the medieval walls or going on an excursion to the Elaphite islands is truly a unique experience. There are also small and quaint places such as Cavtat or the peninsula of Peljesac that are not as glamorous however they offer fine wines, good food and hospitable locals. Familiarize yourself with the hinterland, particularly Konavle, where the tradition of old crafts and trades is maintained. The island of Korcula features knight games and the green island of Mljet is partially a national park.



  Dubrovnik  

DubrovnikDubrovnik, the pearl of the Adriatic, has been added to UNESCO’s World Heritage list and this status is proved by the 1436 protected historical buildings. The historical city of Dubrovnik, the former center of the Dubrovnik Republic, is surrounded by city walls 2 km long which defended the city against attack both on land and at sea for centuries.

 
  Peljesac  

PeljesacPeljesac is the largest peninsula in Dalmatia and its architecture will show you traces of history left by a variety of cultures. The Ston walls connect Mali Ston and Ston, which are known for their rich history and historical stone nucleus, while the walls were built to protect Peljesac by separating it from the mainland.

 
  Korčula  

KorculaBeautiful island of Korčula was allegedly named after the heroine of Greek mythology Kerkyra, who came to live on the island on decision of sea god Poseidon. Korčula was also the home of Marco Polo, famous world explorer. Take a walk around Korčula and see the historic heritage in famous knight game called Moreška where the knights in red and black costumes fight over the affection of a lady.

 
  Islands  

KolocepThe island of Mljet is situated in South Dalmatia near Dubrovnik, with one part of the island being a National Park. There are plenty of fish, crabs, shells or other seafood specialties like smoked octopus you can enjoy there. People usually associate Mljet with Odysseus, mythical king of Ithaca, who, after surviving a shipwreck, swam to a cave od Calypso and became her prisoner.
