The island of Mljet is situated in South Dalmatia near Dubrovnik, with one part of the island being a National Park. There are plenty of fish, crabs, shells or other seafood specialties like smoked octopus you can enjoy there. People usually associate Mljet with Odysseus, mythical king of Ithaca, who, after surviving a shipwreck, swam to a cave od Calypso and became her prisoner.
Today one cave on the island is called Odyssey's cave. You can reach Mljet by ferry from Dubrovnik, Korčula or the Pelješac peninsula.. Small island of Sušac lies 23 NM south of the island of Hvar and 13 NM west of Lastovo. Its eastern
side is shallow and suitable for swimming while its southern and southwestern side is very steep with high cliffs and rocks. There used to be 200 people living on Sušac, but today there is only one family taking care of the lighthouse and one sheepherder. One can also see the remains of two churches on the island. The older church dates back to the 4th century. On the cliffs of the northern side of the island nature formed a small lake that can be accessed by diving through a 15m deep cave. Sušac lighthouse, situated on top of a cliff on the southwestern part of the island, was built in 1878 on a directive by Austro-Hungarian emperor Franz Joseph.
The island of Lastovo is a peaceful and quiet island of unspoiled nature surrounded by clear blue sea. Ubli and Lastovo are two largest settlements on the island. Ubli is the island's major port, and Lastovo is especially interesting for its unusual chimneys, some of which are more than 400 years
old. Skrivena Luka (Hidden Bay) is one of the most beautiful bays on the island. Lastovo is an ideal island for all sailing and fishing lovers, and for all who enjoy good food and wine. We recommend trying Lastovska Maraština, a dry wine of characteristic flavor. Diver will be able to discover the beauty of the underwater caves and colorful flora and fauna, and those which sailing boats will surely find hidden enchanting bays to anchor.
Palagruza lighthouse was built in 1875 on the island of the same name, placed in the middle of the Adriatic sea, between the Italian and Croatian coasts, 68 NM south of Split and 26 NM south of the island of Lastovo. This history laden island of exceptional beauty is Croatia's furthest island. The island itself is 1400 m long, 300 m wide and 90 m high, and is covered in Mediterranean vegetation.
There is an archeological site on the island Palagruza Velika, while numerous finds bear witness to
the fact that Plagruza was the island of the Greek hero Diomedes. The island is a nature reserve with numerous endemic species of flora and fauna.
Beaches
There are two well-kept trails on Palagruza. One of them leads to Stara Vlaka, a pebble bay on the northern side of the island, while the other trail leads to the southern side of Velika Palagruza to Veli Zal so-called "Juzno zlato", one of the most beautiful beaches on the Adriatic. These pebble beaches are ideal for small children due to shallow waters and fine pebbles.
The island of Lopud is one of the eastern group of 13 Elafite islands situated between Pelješac
peninsula and Dubrovnik. The island is an ideal place for relaxation and spending time in nature far away from the hurly-burly of modern life. No vehicles are allowed on the island, nature is preserved in its purest form; there are several sandy beaches and walking paths near the sea. Lopud is famous for one of the most beautiful sandy beaches on the Adriatic called Šunj. It lies on the southern side of the island and you can reach it by taking a slightly adventurous walk.
Elafiti are a group of 13 islands which stretch from the peninsula of Peljesac and Dubrovnik. The name comes from an ancient Greek word elafos – deer, therefore the deer islands. Other than reefs
and smaller islands in this group you will find the islands: Olipa, Tajan, Crkvine, Golec, Kosmec, Jakljan, Misnjak, Sipan, Lopud, Ruda, Sv. Andrija, Kolocep, Daksa. Only Sipan, Lopud and Kolocep are inhabitated.
